Most recently, I finished my first year at South Lake High School. Before that I built on my experience as I completed a long term substitute job at Iroquois Middle School in Clinton TWP Michigan. I taught 8th grade Social Studies and Personal Finance. I received my Bachelor’s of Science Degree and my Social Studies RX certification Degree in order to teach Social Studies in a Secondary Education classroom. I have always been interested in learning new things and want to inspire my students to develop a desire to learn. I developed the urge to become an educator around the 9th grade, when I had a few teachers who really motivated me to achieve my best. From this experience, I have always had an admiration for the teaching occupation. I want and hope to help my students develop the tools and skills they need to achieve excellence, as well as achieving the goals they set for themselves in life.
I chose Social Studies as my major because the content involved is very interesting and comes naturally to me. Over the years I’ve developed a passion for history and the study of geography, economics, and other social studies topics. In a world that is constantly making advances in technology, we currently find our society more globally connected than ever before. This connection implores us to become more diverse and culturally aware in our daily lives. I want to help my students recognize that diversity and being culturally aware is vital in becoming an effective member of our society. Social Studies contains a great deal of exciting content that can be instructed in a variety of creative ways to help students obtain this awareness. It also gives students a chance to relate their own life experiences to past, present or possible future topics in my classroom.
In my free time, I enjoy a wide range of activities. These activities range from; trail hiking, fishing, observing art and music, checking out museums & other historical sights, and any other exciting outdoor activities. In addition to these, I enjoy my fair share of sports and I am quite fond of going to sports venues. I really enjoy experiencing new things, and not taking anything for granted that life has to offer. One of my goals aside from being an educator, is to become a football & basketball coach. To me, there is no better experience than being a leader of young men and women. Team sports go a long way in helping young boys and girls develop very important skills that will help them become productive members of our society. I want to help instill a solid foundation of morals and values in my students and athletes. In the Fall of 2015, I was afforded that opportunity as I was the assistant head coach at Jeanette Junior High School, with one of my best friends. It was a awesome experience for me, regardless of our win and loss record. I also was hired as the 7th grade girls head basketball coach at Eppler Junior High for the Winter of 2015/2016. Currently I'm coaching both 7th grade football and 7th grade girls basketball at Eppler Junior High.
Teaching young, impressionable students is a never ending job. As a teacher, I will need to be constantly learning new and innovative ideas to help better my students’ performance. I want to construct a classroom that promotes equality and I aim to provide my students with the best chance to succeed. I am a firm believer that everyone has their own diverse way of learning and I want to ensure I give each of my students an equal opportunity to learn to the best of their abilities. One of my favorite quotes derives from the immortalized Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders, he said and believed in a “Commitment to Excellence.” It’s a quote he coached, managed, and lived his life by. I will incorporate this attitude and belief into my classroom and my student’s efforts. I want to do more than educate my students on course content, I want to provide each of my students with important life skills in order for them to achieve anything they set their mind to. Overall, I hope that I can become an inspiring role model for my students, as some of my teachers have been for me. All it takes is one person to connect with a student and help him or her become a highly motivated, determined individual to succeed.
